About St Mary's Church
St Mary’s Church is a Church of England parish church at Old Byland in North Yorkshire, serving Scawton. Dating from around 1150, it remains an important medieval building and has held Grade I listed status since 1955.
Constructed in limestone and roofed with Welsh slate, the church comprises a nave, chancel and southern porch, with a timber bellcote above the western gable. Many windows were modified, especially during the 1400s. C. Hodgson Fowler oversaw restoration work in 1892 and introduced the porch. Its entrance has a rounded arch supported by small columns with scalloped capitals. Interior features include a possible lavatorium beside the altar, along with an aumbry, piscina and sedile. The circular font may be Norman, although its base is later, while its eight-sided wooden cover dates from the 17th century.
