About Church of St Wilfred
The Church of St Wilfred is the Church of England parish church for Brayton, a village adjoining Selby to the south-west in North Yorkshire. It continues to serve the parish and was designated a Grade I listed building in 1966.
Dating largely from the 1100s, the church retains a west tower, an arched opening into the chancel and a southern doorway from that period. Magnesian limestone forms the building, whose plan includes a nave of three bays and a longer chancel of four. During the early 1300s, the chancel was extended and the nave gained aisles; further rebuilding followed later in the same century. The tower received its lantern in the 1400s, while its spire was lowered in 1766. John Loughborough Pearson directed substantial Victorian work from 1873 until 1884. Notable details include stained glass installed in the east window in 1895 and a monument from 1558 commemorating George Darcy and Dorothea, his wife.
