About Church of All Saints
The Church of All Saints is a Church of England parish church in Old Byland, North Yorkshire. It serves within the parish of Upper Ryedale and is an active place of worship. The building has held Grade II* listed status since 1955. Poetry is also made available for worshippers and visitors.
Originating in the 12th century, the church was substantially reconstructed during the early 1400s, with the nave’s southern wall and the tower surviving from the earlier structure. William Henry Crossland carried out restoration work in 1873, adding the porch and renewing the southern entrance. Built from sandstone and limestone, it has Welsh and Westmorland slate roofing, a three-bay nave, a two-bay chancel and a bellcote above the western gable. Interior details include a possible fragment of a Norman tower arch, a carved human head on a capital, an old recut octagonal font and memorials dating from the 17th century onwards.
