About All Saints

All Saints is the Church of England parish church serving Old Byland in North Yorkshire. It remains the village’s parish church and holds Grade I listed status, granted in 1955 in recognition of its historic and architectural importance.

The church dates from around 1100, with its nave and tower surviving from that period. Built in limestone and roofed with Welsh slate, it comprises a nave, chancel and a tower incorporating the south porch. The chancel was enlarged and reconstructed during the 15th century, when the roof was also renewed. A restoration in 1909 included substantial work to the chancel walls and the addition or replacement of several windows. The porch entrance has Norman carved capitals depicting dragons, while a sundial is set into its eastern wall. Inside are a Norman tub-shaped font and medieval floor tiles arranged in a circular design.
