About St. John's Church

St. John's Church is the Church of England parish church for Bilsdale Midcable, within the Middlesbrough area of North Yorkshire. The church continues in its parish role and has held Grade II listed status since 1966.

Temple Moore produced its Decorated Gothic design, with construction beginning after the Earl of Feversham placed the foundation stone in 1893. Consecration followed in 1896. Local sandstone forms the walls, while slate from the Lake District covers the roof. Its layout combines the nave and sanctuary beneath one continuous roofline, alongside a northern aisle and a steeple at the western end. A three-level square tower, strengthened by angled buttresses, carries a clock and rises into an octagonal spire with openings and a wind vane. Original interior joinery remains prominent in the pews, preaching desk and choir furniture. The elevated sanctuary includes patterned stone paving and a piscina recessed into its south wall.
