About Church of St Mary

The Church of St Mary is an active Church of England parish church in Tadcaster, North Yorkshire. Standing near Kirkgate beside the River Wharfe, it occupies a site long affected by flooding. The church was designated Grade II* in 1985 and belongs to a parish comprising four churches.

A stone church was established here around 1150, then enlarged before Scottish forces burned and plundered it in 1318. Rebuilding followed around 1380, with work between 1420 and 1480 giving the church much of its current form. Built from local magnesian limestone and roofed in Welsh slate, it has Perpendicular Gothic architecture, an embattled western tower, aisled nave and chancel, and a southern porch. To reduce flood damage, the building was dismantled, raised by 4 feet and reconstructed between 1875 and 1877 using substantial historic fabric. Inside are a medieval arch, part of an Anglo-Saxon cross, carved timber fittings, marble flooring and stained glass designed chiefly by Edward Burne-Jones. The organ dates from 1833, while eight bells were recast in 1935.
