About Middlesbrough Cathedral
Middlesbrough Cathedral is a Roman Catholic place of worship at Coulby Newham in Middlesbrough, North Yorkshire. Dedicated to Saint Mary, it is the episcopal church of the Diocese of Middlesbrough and the official seat of its bishop. The diocese forms part of the Liverpool ecclesiastical province.
Its predecessor welcomed worshippers in 1878 on Sussex Street and became the diocesan cathedral soon afterwards. Serious structural concerns, together with population movement across Middlesbrough, prompted construction of a replacement, beginning in November 1985. Bishop Augustine Harris blessed its cornerstone and formally dedicated the completed cathedral in May 1988. Frank Swainston created the preliminary scheme, while Peter Fenton completed the plans and furnishings. Designed for clear sight and sound during Catholic worship, the bright contemporary building contains a sanctuary, main worship space, sacrament chapel, entrance area, hall and bell tower. Its Belgian-made organ features 16 stops, twin keyboards, pedals and an ash cabinet shaped to complement the roof.
