About Church of St Mary
The Church of St Mary is a Church of England parish church in Myton-on-Swale, within York, North Yorkshire. It remains the village’s parish church and has held Grade II* listed status since 1960, recognising its special architectural and historic interest.
Dating largely from the early 1200s, the church was modified during the 15th century, including the replacement of several windows. Constructed in sandstone, it has a green-tiled roof marked by red-tile bands. Its layout includes a nave, north aisle, chancel and south porch, with a three-stage western tower set partly within the nave. C. Hodgson Fowler oversaw a restoration in 1886, adding the porch and tower and renewing the roof. Features include a medieval cross-slab fragment, a battlemented tower parapet, a south-facing clock and an east window containing stained glass by Charles Eamer Kempe.
