About Saint Joseph

Saint Joseph is a Roman Catholic church at 1 Tanton Road in Middlesbrough, North Yorkshire. Sunday Mass is held at 9.00 am.

The church has roots in a mission established in 1860 in a converted hayloft. Apollonia Bland gave £1,000 towards a permanent building in 1870, and George Goldie designed the church, which was erected from 1872 to 1873. Built in red brick with darker brick detailing around the windows, it comprises a nave, sanctuary and northern aisle beneath a concrete-tiled roof. Following a fire during the 1970s, the interior was restored and rearranged, while F. Swainston & Associates added the aisle. Notable details include a twin bell opening at the west end, sandstone altar and font, bench seating, and stained glass designed by G. S. Walsh during the 1940s.
