About St James

St James is the Church of England parish church serving Boroughbridge in North Yorkshire. The present building has held Grade II listed status since 1984.

A medieval chapel connected with St Andrew’s in Aldborough previously occupied a site in today’s St James’s Square. The church now standing on Church Lane was completed in 1852 to plans by James Mallinson and Thomas Healey. Built in sandstone and roofed with stone slates and tiles, it has a restrained Decorated Gothic design comprising an aisled nave, clerestory, chancel, south porch and western tower. The three-stage tower, reportedly modelled on its medieval predecessor, includes a stair turret, clock faces, bell openings and a battlemented parapet. William Wailes created the stained glass in the four-light eastern window. Late Norman stone fragments incorporated into the interior may have come from earlier places of worship and were reused in the former chapel.
