About Church of St Oswald, Lythe
The Church of St Oswald, Lythe is the Church of England parish church serving Lythe and nearby communities in North Yorkshire. It stands beside the A174, just east of the village and close to the top of Lythe Bank, overlooking the coast. The church remains an active place of worship and has held Grade I listed status since 1969.
Christian worship has taken place on the site from the early 13th century, while masonry discovered during later work dates from before the Norman Conquest. The building underwent alterations in 1769 and 1819, followed by an extensive reconstruction by Sir Walter Tapper in 1910. Much of the earlier fabric was replaced, although the northern wall and eastern part of the chancel survived. Tapper modified the Norman tower to carry a spire, which became a coastal landmark for seafarers. The roof was renewed in 2018 using stone tiles.
