About Church of All Saints
The Church of All Saints serves the Church of England parish of Burythorpe, North Yorkshire. It occupies a hilltop beyond the village’s western edge, overlooking the landscape on every side. The building has been protected at Grade II since 1966.
A medieval place of worship once stood here, but was removed in the 1850s to make way for the present structure by architects John Bownas and William Atkinson. Designed in the Gothic Revival tradition, it is constructed from limestone beneath Welsh slate. Its plan includes a four-section nave, southern entrance porch, one-section chancel and northern vestry. At the western end, a central buttress supports a gabled bell opening, with trefoil-topped lancets nearby. Other details include paired lancets along the nave and a group of rising lancets at the east end. The interior contains a cylindrical font from the 1100s and two marble commemorative panels dating to the 1850s. Alexander Gibbs created the east window when the church was built.
