About Church of St John Evangelist
The Church of St John Evangelist serves as the Church of England parish church for Whitwell-on-the-Hill in North Yorkshire. It is protected as a Grade II* listed building, a designation granted in 1985.
George Edmund Street designed the church, which was erected between 1858 and 1860 after the village had previously belonged to the parish centred on St Michael’s in Crambe. Its sandstone walls and tiled roof follow a Gothic Revival design inspired by the later 13th century. The plan includes a nave, chancel, southern porch, northern vestry and a steeple on the south side. The two-stage tower features a clock, slender pointed windows and a rounded stair turret, while its broach spire contains small openings. Four lancets and a rose window mark the western frontage. Marble inlay decorates the font, pulpit and reredos inside.
