About Church of Saint Mary
The Church of Saint Mary serves the Church of England parish in Birdsall, North Yorkshire. Still in use as the village’s parish church, it has held Grade II protection since 1966.
Its documented history reaches back to 1130. After the former structure fell into disrepair, Henry Willoughby, sixth Baron Middleton, commissioned a replacement in 1824 from architects James Pigott Pritchett and Charles Watson. Further alterations followed from 1879 to 1881, when C. Hodgson Fowler enlarged the chancel and raised the tower. The limestone building follows Gothic Revival design, with a nave of three bays, a two-bay chancel and a three-level tower at the western end. Distinctive details include pierced parapets, an elaborate tower top with small corner turrets, and a five-light eastern window. Memorials inside include a reclining female figure dating from the 1300s, black marble monuments of the late 1600s, and pieces by John Michael Rysbrack and Richard Westmacott.
