About St. Mark's Church
St Mark’s Church is an active Church of England parish church in the Southport area of Merseyside. It belongs to the Ormskirk deanery and Liverpool diocese. The parish and benefice also encompass the Good Shepherd Mission, a metal chapel on Smithy Lane in Scarisbrick.
The church was erected between 1848 and 1851 as a chapel serving the wider Ormskirk parish, before Scarisbrick gained separate parish status in 1869. George Shaw of Saddleworth designed the building in an early 14th-century Gothic style, using locally quarried pale sandstone and blue slate. William Edward Willink enlarged it in 1908, adding a porch and vestry while altering the interior. Memorial stained glass portrays Joshua, Cornelius, St George and St Nicholas, accompanied by marble tablets naming those lost in both world wars. An electronic organ arrived as a gift in 1947.
