About St Cuthbert's Church
St Cuthbert’s Church stands in Churchtown, a former village now within Southport, Merseyside. This Church of England place of worship continues to serve its parish and belongs to Liverpool Diocese, under Warrington Archdeaconry and the North Meols deanery. Granted Grade II protection in 1951, it was historically the parish church for North Meols when the area formed part of Lancashire.
A place of worship occupied this ground by the reign of Stephen, who died in 1154. Fire destroyed the earlier structure, prompting construction of the present church from 1730 to 1739. Work undertaken in 1806 was largely superseded when Isaac Taylor led a thorough renovation during 1908 and 1909, including the current chancel. Inside are stained-glass windows made during the 20th century, wooden carvings transferred from Liverpool’s St Peter’s Church, and numerous memorials commemorating the Fleetwood and Hesketh families. The Heskeths also have a crypt within the building. Stocks made in 1741 remain near the churchyard gateway.
