About Eaton Chapel
Eaton Chapel is a private place of worship in Eaton Park, north of Eaton Hall and near Eccleston in Cheshire. The Grade I listed church remains the Grosvenor family chapel, hosting christenings, confirmations and memorial services. It also opens on three days each year, while charities may hold carol concerts there in December.
Work began in 1869 as part of Hugh Grosvenor’s redevelopment of the estate, with Alfred Waterhouse responsible for the design. Built from pale sandstone beneath grey slate, the church has a five-bay nave, three-bay chancel and polygonal apse. Its detached tower is linked to the main structure and rises through six levels to a richly detailed spire. Inside are striped pink and buff stonework, vaulted roofs, walnut seating and extensive alabaster fittings. Frederic Shields designed the stained glass and mosaics, while Joseph Boehm created the reclining memorial to Constance, Duchess of Westminster. The chapel also contains a working Charles Whiteley organ and a 28-bell carillon.
