About St Mary's Church
St Mary’s Church serves the Church of England community at Bruera, a small settlement between Saighton and Aldford in Cheshire. It remains an active parish church within the Diocese of Chester, sharing a benefice with churches in Waverton and Aldford. The church has Grade II* listed status.
Although extensively restored in 1896, the building retains Norman fabric and was first documented around 1150 as a chapel belonging to St Oswald’s parish in Chester. Later changes included the rebuilding of the south entrance during the 14th century and the addition of a southern chapel in the 15th. Constructed from red sandstone beneath slate roofing, it has an oak belfry and a short, shingled spire. Notable interior features include Jacobean chairs, an 18th-century altar table, Arts and Crafts stained glass from 1897, memorials carved by Joseph Nollekens, and an organ made by H. Moulding and Co. in 1869.
