About St James

St James is an active Church of England parish church at 26 Lulworth Road in Birkdale, Southport, Merseyside. It belongs to the Diocese of Liverpool and holds services, prayer meetings and groups for adults and children. The church has Grade II listed status.

Built in 1856–57 during Birkdale’s planned expansion, the church was designed by A. Rimmer and subsequently enlarged by J. F. Doyle. Its red sandstone walls and slate roofing frame a design inspired by medieval architecture, with a four-stage western tower, spire, porches, transepts and a substantial chancel. Inside, the nave and chancel form one continuous space. Features include stained glass by Shrigley and Hunt from around 1910, and a 1965 window by Harcourt M. Doyle showing notable women, among them Gladys Aylward. William Hill & Sons made the three-manual pipe organ in 1894; it was rebuilt in 1988 and 2003. Extensive internal reordering took place in 2002–03.
