About United Reformed Church, Stamford
United Reformed Church, Stamford is a practising congregation on Star Lane in Stamford, Lincolnshire. It belongs to the United Reformed Church’s East Midlands Synod and is involved with local ecumenical and Street Pastors groups. Its historic home is designated Grade II.
Completed in 1819, the late Georgian church replaced a 1720 chapel on land acquired the previous year. That chapel had succeeded an earlier meeting house in St Paul’s Street, destroyed during Jacobite unrest in 1714. The present structure is notable for red-brick construction in a town largely characterised by stone, with an ashlar foundation and slate covering. Round-headed windows include surviving Georgian glazing divisions above and later Victorian work below. Internally, Doric supports carry galleries along three sides, while the fittings include enclosed nineteenth-century seating and a moulded plaster ceiling. A gateway dating from 1862 incorporates part of the former Cornmarket arcade.
