About St Paul's Church, Stamford
St Paul’s Church, Stamford, stands in Stamford, Lincolnshire, and is a Grade II listed building. Once among the town’s medieval parish churches, it was closed for worship and mostly demolished during the Reformation. The surviving structure later became part of Stamford School and has served as its chapel since the early twentieth century.
Built by 1152, the church retains sections of its Norman fabric, including two bays of the former south aisle. Its walls combine coursed Barnack stone rubble with dressed masonry, while small arches, rounded corbels and a later battlemented parapet enrich the exterior. Other surviving details include medieval windows, a sealed fifteenth-century entrance, a doorway that once led to the rood loft stairs, piscina recesses and two tomb niches. One contains the inscribed stone coffin cover of Henry de Elyngton, rector from 1384 to 1400. The building was restored and enlarged in 1929–30 as a memorial to former pupils and staff who died in the First World War.
