About St John the Baptist's Church, Stamford
St John the Baptist’s Church stands in central Stamford, Lincolnshire. This former Anglican place of worship became redundant in 2003 and is now cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust. Originating in the 12th century, it is protected as a Grade I listed building.
Although some early masonry survives, much of the limestone church dates to the 15th century, when Stamford prospered through wool and cloth. Completed in 1451, it is predominantly Perpendicular Gothic, with lead-covered roofs, battlemented walls and a five-stage western tower crowned by pinnacles. Inside are a carved nave roof with angel bosses, medieval screens and stained glass from 1451. Later additions include an ornate 17th-century font cover, an 1870 Bevington organ and four bells, the earliest cast in 1550. Edward Browning led a High Church restoration in 1856, with further repairs following in subsequent decades.
