About All Saints Church
All Saints Church is a Church of England parish church in Stamford, Lincolnshire. Standing at All Saints Place, close to Red Lion Square, it remains an active place of worship and is protected at Grade I for its exceptional historic and architectural importance. The parish also encompasses the former Church of St John the Baptist, which became redundant in 2003.
Although an earlier central Stamford church was recorded in the Domesday survey, no part of that building survives. The present church, begun around 1201, retains some masonry from the 1100s, while most of its fabric belongs to the 13th century. Unusually for a parish church, the exterior features decorative blind arches. The Browne family financed substantial additions during the 1400s, including the steeple and inventive details such as ornamented battlements. A William Hill & Sons organ dating from 1890 was rebuilt by James Jepson Binns in 1916.
