About St Helen's Church
St Helen’s Church is on Church Grove in Overton, Morecambe, Lancashire. It continues to serve as a Church of England parish church, forming part of the Diocese of Blackburn. Recognised for its particular architectural and historic importance, it has Grade II* listed status.
The earliest surviving fabric belongs to the 1100s. The building uses roughly laid sandstone and is roofed with stone slates, with a broad chancel, nave and northern transept. Alterations in 1771 included substantial reconstruction, and William Coulthard added the elongated transept in 1830. Lancaster architects Austin and Paley oversaw repairs and changes in 1902, including work to the roof, flooring, seating and windows. Their project revealed remains of a previous polygonal east end. Features of interest include an eroded Romanesque entrance, an eighteenth-century pulpit and canopy, a font of sandstone with eight sides, and painted displays of the Commandments and Lord’s Prayer.
