About St Michael's Church, Aughton
St Michael’s Church, Aughton is an active Church of England parish church on Church Lane in Aughton, Lancashire. It belongs to the Diocese of Liverpool, within the Ormskirk deanery, and shares a benefice with Holy Trinity in Bickerstaffe. The church is protected as a Grade I listed building.
Dating from around 1150, its earliest surviving fabric includes a sealed Norman entrance and part of the adjoining wall. The nave and steeple are chiefly 14th-century, while the north aisle was widened and reconstructed in the 1540s. Built from locally sourced grey-brown sandstone and roofed with stone slates, the church has a tower rising to an eight-sided bell stage and spire. Restorations took place in 1876 and 1913–14. Interior details include an Anglo-Saxon cross fragment dated to about 850, remnants of medieval glazing, an octagonal font, a medieval grave slab and six bells, four cast in 1715 and two in 1935.
