About St Ethelbert's Church

St Ethelbert's Church is a Roman Catholic place of worship on Hereson Road in Ramsgate, Kent. Dedicated to St Ethelbert and St Gertrude, it serves as the parish church for Ramsgate and Minster, a parish formed in 2009 through the union of four Catholic communities in south-west Thanet.

Funded by the philanthropist Frances Elizabeth Ellis, the church was begun in 1901 and completed on 17 August 1902. Peter Paul Pugin designed it in an Early Decorated Gothic style, with construction by the Ramsgate firm W. W. Martin and Sons. Its exterior combines brickwork with stone detailing and leaded tracery windows. Inside are an open wooden roof, a west gallery and Gothic furnishings designed by Pugin. Notable features include a Gothic altar supported by polished Labrador granite columns, a statue of St Gertrude and an image of Our Lady of Lourdes in the Lady Chapel. The older presbytery was later replaced to designs by parishioner Robin Carter.
