About St Augustine's Church

St Augustine's Church is a Roman Catholic church and shrine in Ramsgate, Kent. Dedicated to St Augustine of Canterbury, it stands within a group of buildings associated with Augustus Pugin, including his neighbouring home, The Grange. The church is protected as a Grade I listed building and is also the burial place of its architect.

Pugin began construction in 1845, having acquired the site two years earlier. He designed and financed the church himself, continuing work until his death in 1852, after which his sons carried out further elements of his plans. A schoolroom, finished in 1846, initially served as the place of worship and housed a free school for local children. The main church was under cover by July 1849. Its traditional east to west orientation was carefully fitted onto a narrow plot. Pugin lies with several relatives in a vault below the chantry chapel that he created.
