About St Mary's Church, Capel-le-Ferne
St Mary’s Church, dating from about 1150, stands northeast of Capel-le-Ferne in Kent, near Capel Church Farm and roughly two miles from Folkestone. This former Anglican place of worship is protected at Grade I and has been cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust since 1986.
Built of flint beneath tiled roofs, the church comprises a nave, chancel, southern porch and western tower. Alterations followed in the 13th century, when the tower was added, while the porch and stone division between nave and chancel belong to the 14th century. Most windows were inserted during the 1400s, although one small Norman opening survives. A restoration took place in 1890. Inside, the medieval stone screen has a distinctive circular-headed opening once framing the rood cross, a feature not found elsewhere in England. Other details include medieval glass fragments, a 13th-century piscina, an octagonal font and a brass memorial from 1526.
