About St Mary the Virgin Church, Thurnham
St Mary the Virgin Church is a small Church of England parish church in Thurnham, near Maidstone in Kent. It is recognised as a Grade I listed building.
Construction began during the 12th century, followed by changes extending into the early 1600s. The building has an undivided nave and chancel, a western tower, porches to the north and south, and a northern chapel dating from around 1603. Flint, irregular stonework and tiled roofs form much of the exterior. The two-level tower has corner buttresses and a crenellated top; a pointed spire recorded in the late 18th century has since disappeared. Inside are a medieval arch leading to the chapel, an octagonal font that may date to the 14th century, historic pews and an elaborately carved reredos made in Oberammergau. Memorials commemorate several people associated with the church, while the churchyard includes several Grade II listed monuments.
