About All Saints Church, Maidstone
All Saints Church, Maidstone is a Church of England parish church beside the River Medway in Maidstone, Kent. Recognised at Grade I, it is regarded as an especially important example of Kent’s Perpendicular Gothic architecture. The building stands among several historic neighbours, including the former college remains and the Archbishop’s Palace.
Archbishop William Courtenay established the church in 1395 for the College of All Saints, replacing an earlier church dedicated to St Mary. Archbishop Thomas Arundel oversaw its completion around 1396–1398. Constructed from local ragstone, it has a six-bay nave, north and south aisles, a clerestory, crenellated parapets and a 24-metre south-west tower. The tower’s former spire was lost to lightning in 1730. Features include medieval misericords, a seventeenth-century font and memorials to Courtenay, Lawrence Washington and members of the Astley family. John Loughborough Pearson designed a replacement timber roof, screens and reredos in the late nineteenth century. Ten bells hang in the tower.
