About Robertson Street United Reformed Church
Robertson Street United Reformed Church stands between Robertson Street and Cambridge Road in central Hastings, East Sussex. The Grade II listed building is recognised for its historic and architectural interest. It ceased operating as a United Reformed church in 2012 after falling membership and maintenance costs became unsustainable. A Pentecostal congregation subsequently acquired it, and the building remains in use for worship as His Place Church.
The congregation was established by Daniel Smith in 1856, with its first Gothic Revival chapel completed the following year. When that chapel became too small and needed substantial repairs, a larger replacement was commissioned from Hastings architect Henry Ward. John Howell and Son began construction after a foundation stone ceremony in September 1884, and the new church was dedicated in October 1885. Its richly ornamented interior and exterior form a prominent urban building. The sloping site creates a split-level layout, while part of the gallery extends above the alley beside the Robertson Street entrance.
