About Holy Cross Church, Bearsted
Holy Cross Church, Bearsted is an active Church of England parish church in Bearsted, Maidstone, Kent. Dating from the medieval period, it is protected as a Grade I listed building, a designation it has held since 1967.
Work began during the 13th century, with further phases following in the 14th and 15th centuries. Local ragstone was used for the walls, while plain tiles cover the roofs. The plan includes a nave, north aisle, south porch and chancel. At the western end stands a square tower of three stages, crowned by a battlemented parapet with three replacement stone beasts. Inside are a four-bay arcade, medieval sedilia and a piscina, as well as memorials to members of the Mason, Brockill, Cage and Fludd families. Victorian work introduced nave and aisle pews and panelling, and much of the roof was renewed during the 20th century.
