About St Leonards-on-Sea United Reformed Church
St Leonards-on-Sea United Reformed Church stands in St Leonards-on-Sea, within Hastings, East Sussex. Formerly a Congregational place of worship, it closed for religious use in 2008. The Grade II listed building now accommodates a weekend market in its lower hall, while the upper hall is licensed for weddings.
Founded by local Congregationalist James Griffin in 1863, the church was built in 1864 to a design by Matthew Edward Habershon. Its locally quarried sandstone was donated by Thomas Spalding, and the first service took place in October 1864. The building became a prominent feature beside a principal road, although its copper spire was destroyed during the storm of 1987. After standing vacant and facing possible demolition, it changed ownership in 2012 and underwent extensive renovation. The restored lower hall opened as an indoor market in April 2024.
