About St Martin of Tours Church, Detling

St Martin of Tours Church, Detling serves as an active Anglican parish church in the Maidstone area of Kent. Named for Saint Martin of Tours, it is recognised for its exceptional historic and architectural importance with Grade I listed status.

Its Norman nave and chancel originated during the twelfth century, followed by additions in the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries and substantial Victorian restoration. The structure combines flint, local ragstone and tiled roofing. An Early English north aisle was expanded during the 1880s, while Perpendicular Gothic work appears in the north chapel and south porch. The ragstone tower rises in two sections, supported by angled buttresses, and carries a wooden shingled spire created by R. C. Hussey in 1861. Interior furnishings include an early, undecorated twelve-sided font and an elaborate oak lectern from around 1340–50, thought to have originated at Boxley Abbey. A pipe organ made in the 1850s arrived from a Maidstone Congregational church in 1973.
