About Church of St Mary Magdalene, North Ockendon

The Church of St Mary Magdalene, North Ockendon is a Church of England church in Greater London, within the Upminster postal area. Dedicated to Mary Magdalene, it remains a place of worship and is protected as a Grade I listed building.

Much of the present structure is fourteenth-century, although it occupies the site of an earlier church. Its tower was added during the fifteenth century and later used by the Reverend William Derham when calculating the speed of sound with unprecedented accuracy. Richard Armstrong directed an extensive restoration in 1858, funded by Cranham Hall landowner Richard Benyon, while a northern extension was finished in 2003. Inside are a likely seventeenth-century pulpit, an 1842 font and Coade stone royal arms, and an 1879 Last Supper reredos. Memorials include the marble tomb and stone figures of Sir Gabriel Poyntz and his wife Etheldreda. The tower contains six bells arranged unusually for anticlockwise ringing.
