About Church of St Laurence, Upminster

The Church of St Laurence, Upminster, serves as an active Anglican parish church in Upminster, Greater London. Dating from 1201, it is listed at Grade I for its historic and architectural importance. Upminster’s name is linked to this ancient minster and is thought to describe a church occupying higher ground.

Much of the fabric reflects building practices of the 13th century. Its tower has stone-rubble masonry, lower buttressing and a shingled spire with lead covering, a form associated with Essex. W. Gibbs Bartleet directed extensive alterations during 1862 and 1863. Sir Charles Nicholson oversaw another major scheme in 1928, adapting the earlier chancel for use within the nave and creating a replacement choir and sanctuary. He was also responsible for chapels on the south and north sides. Inside are a 15th-century baptismal font brought from Upminster Hill Chapel, Violet Pinwill’s pulpit, and memorials to the Branfill and Esdaile families.
