About Church of All Saints, Cranham
The Church of All Saints, Cranham is a Church of England church in Upminster, Greater London. It is protected as a Grade II listed building.
The present church dates from a rebuilding undertaken around 1871, using the foundations of its predecessor. James Oglethorpe, who founded Georgia, and his wife are buried beneath the middle of the chancel. His marble memorial, which includes a poetic inscription, remains on the chancel’s south wall. During the 1930s, Thornwell Jacobs, president of Oglethorpe University, excavated the family vault. The archdeacon refused permission for Oglethorpe’s remains to be transferred to a specially constructed shrine at the university in Atlanta.
