About Church of St Mary, Lamberhurst

The Church of St Mary, Lamberhurst is a Church of England parish church in Kilndown, Kent. With origins extending back more than a millennium, it remains in use as a place of worship and is protected as a Grade I listed building.

A religious building stood on the site by 998 and was consecrated that September, although the probable timber structure no longer exists. Leeds Priory received the church around 1137. Its oldest surviving masonry dates to the early 1200s, while much of the nave, south aisle and porch was reconstructed in the following century. The ashlar west tower was heightened around 1475 and includes buttresses and a stair turret. Ewan Christian rebuilt the chancel and south chapel in 1870, preserving medieval seating between them. Notable features include a Jacobean pulpit dated 1630, stained glass by Hardman and Co., Clayton and Bell, and John Piper, and memorials to Richard Thomas and members of the Hussey family.
