About Christ Church

Christ Church, on Church Road in Kilndown, Kent, serves as the village’s Church of England parish church. Restored after serious wartime damage, it remains in use and holds Grade I listed status.

Viscount Beresford commissioned the building in 1839, and it was consecrated in 1841 before Kilndown became a separate parish in 1843. Constructed from sandstone quarried locally, the church has a broad, low nave and chancel, together with a two-stage western tower crowned by a stone spire. Alexander Beresford Hope oversaw extensive alterations during the early 1840s, drawing on several prominent Victorian architects. Notable details include a stone altar designed by Anthony Salvin, William Butterfield’s lectern, a carved reredos designed by William Slater, and numerous stained-glass windows, many by Franz Xaver Eggert. Bombing in 1940 damaged eighteen windows and disturbed roof tiles, but the building was subsequently restored.
