About St Mary's Church, Goudhurst

St Mary’s Church, Goudhurst is a Church of England parish church in Kilndown, Kent. Built around 1250, it remains in parish use and is designated Grade I for its special historic and architectural interest.

This sizeable sandstone building dates chiefly to the 13th century, with aisles flanking the nave and chapels adjoining the chancel. A lightning strike in 1637 brought down the 115-foot spire and ruined the western tower, destroying its five bells. Three masons from London replaced the tower in 1638, using both Gothic and Classical forms; eight bells now hang there. Extensive Victorian restoration took place from 1865 to 1877, including additions to the southern aisle and a new vestry. Notable furnishings include a medieval pulpit bearing carved apostles and religious emblems, and chapel screens containing late medieval woodwork. There is also a coloured timber and gesso effigy of Sir Alexander Culpeper with his wife Constance. Its elevated tower was used for observations during the 1784–1790 survey linking the Greenwich and Paris observatories.
