About Holy Trinity Church, Rotherhithe
Holy Trinity Church, Rotherhithe serves an Anglican parish in south-east London and belongs to the Diocese of Southwark. The congregation continues to worship in the present church, while its surviving memorial to those who died in the First World War has Grade II protection.
A previous church was erected in 1837–38 after dockyard expansion brought more residents to the area. Sampson Kempthorne gave that building a Gothic Revival design, including an ample nave, pointed windows and a battlemented tower at the western end. It was lost during an incendiary raid on 7 September 1940, although the nearby school premises remained standing and accommodated worship until the replacement opened. Completed in 1959 to plans prepared by Thomas Ford two years earlier, the current building contains Hans Feibusch’s striking mural portraying the death and rising of Christ. It is also known for its acoustic and has provided a concert venue for Musica Antica Rotherhithe since 2016.
