About St Giles Church
St Giles Church stands on Church Lane in Horsted Keynes, West Sussex, and serves a wide countryside parish within the Church of England. Worship is held regularly, and the congregation maintains a relationship with the village school. Its Grade I designation reflects the building’s exceptional historic and architectural interest.
Largely built by Norman craftsmen during the 1100s, the church replaced an earlier Saxon structure but incorporated surviving elements, including a doorway and the base of the tower. The Norman building was laid out in the form of a cross, a plan retained despite substantial alterations in the 1200s and 1300s and later Victorian work. A broach spire rises above the tower and is visible across the surrounding area. Inside are numerous memorials associated with established local families, including a scarce medieval heart shrine dating from the 13th century. Harold Macmillan, the former Prime Minister, lies in his family’s burial plot in the extensive churchyard.
