About All Hallows On The Wall
All Hallows On The Wall is a Church of England place of worship at 83 London Wall in the City of London. The name recalls its site beside the remains of the capital’s historic boundary. Designated Grade I in 1950, the church has longstanding links with the Worshipful Company of Carpenters. It has accommodated the youth charity XLP and the regularly worshipping City Gates Church congregation since 2014.
The site’s first known church dated from the opening decades of the 1100s and stood upon part of the Roman defences. Although protected from the flames that swept London in 1666, the old structure later declined. George Dance the Younger replaced it in 1767, aged 24, drawing upon Classical architecture he had studied in Italy. The restrained brick frontage is complemented by a tower faced in stone above the western entrance. Within, a single vaulted worship space leads to an apse capped by a half-dome, while Ionic supports carry a decorative band. Damage sustained in wartime was repaired in the early 1960s.
