All Hallows-by-the-Tower is a Church of England place of worship in Byward Street, central London, beside the Tower of London. It remains in use and is protected at Grade I. Services take place at 11:00 am each Sunday and at 6:00 pm on Wednesdays.
The church is traditionally dated to 675, though its precise origins are uncertain, and it had a long association with Barking Abbey. Its historic fabric includes a medieval arch incorporating Roman masonry and tiles, alongside work from the Norman era and later medieval centuries. A gunpowder blast in 1650 destroyed the western tower, which was replaced eight years later. The building survived London’s fire of 1666 after neighbouring structures were demolished to form a barrier against the flames. Wartime bombing later devastated the interior, prompting a substantial reconstruction. The renewed building was dedicated in 1957 and contains wood carving by Ellen Nora Payne.
