About Cathedral of the Dormition and All Saints

The Cathedral of the Dormition and All Saints is an Orthodox church at 67 Ennismore Gardens, Knightsbridge, London. It is the principal church of the Diocese of Sourozh and provides a setting for worship throughout the year as well as diocesan business. Its congregation includes people from several national backgrounds. The building is designated Grade II*.

Lewis Vulliamy designed the building for an Anglican congregation, and it was completed and consecrated in 1849. He favoured the Lombard manner over the Gothic approach then commonly used, but limited finances curtailed his intended scheme. In 1860, R. L. Roumieu finished the 36.5-metre bell tower from Vulliamy’s drawings. Work undertaken during 1891 and 1892 reshaped the western frontage after San Zeno in Verona. Heywood Sumner was responsible for the stained glass and sgraffito work. Orthodox use began in 1956, and the Diocese of Sourozh bought the property in 1978.
