About Greek Orthodox Cathedral of St Sophia
The Greek Orthodox Cathedral of St Sophia stands on Moscow Road in Bayswater, London. This Grade I listed Orthodox church remains active, with services held each Saturday and Sunday. It also supports Byzantine music, a Greek polyphonic choir and a school offering Greek history, language and dance.
Designed by John Oldrid Scott in the Byzantine Revival style, the church was built in 1879 for London’s growing Greek Orthodox community. Its first liturgy took place that June, followed by consecration in 1882. The restrained exterior has a dome and round-headed windows, while the interior features richly coloured marble. Ludwig Thiersch painted the icon screen, and mosaics designed by A G Walker were installed in place of wall paintings because of concerns about London’s damp conditions. Further mosaics by Boris Anrep were added from 1926. After suffering bomb damage during the Blitz, the building was repaired.
