About Church of St Nicholas
The Church of St Nicholas is an active Church of England parish church in Grays, Essex. Dedicated to the fourth-century Bishop Nicholas of Myra, it belongs to the Mardyke Team Ministry. The church is protected as a Grade I listed building.
Dating from the 12th century, the church is built chiefly from flint and stone rubble, with Reigate stone detailing. Its distinctive circular tower was added during the 13th century and later repaired after a partial collapse in 1744. Much of the building was reconstructed towards the end of the 15th century, when a northern aisle and chantry chapel were introduced. A richly ornamented Norman doorway was also relocated at that time. The chancel and northern chapel underwent substantial restoration in 1866. Notable furnishings include an Elizabethan marble memorial to Sir Richard Saltonstall and his family, while the present bell was cast by the Whitechapel Bell Foundry and installed in 1865.
