About St Clement's Church
St Clement’s Church is a Church of England building in West Thurrock, Grays, Essex. Originating around 1250, it holds Grade I protection. Following closure for regular worship in 1977 and subsequent neglect, the building and churchyard were restored by 1990. Both its exterior and interior were used as a funeral setting in Four Weddings and a Funeral.
The site’s Christian origins predate the Norman Conquest. An early twelfth-century structure had a round tower functioning as the main worship space. During the thirteenth century, aisles, chapels and an enlarged chancel were introduced. Around the end of the fifteenth century, arches replaced the chancel’s side walls, and a larger tower superseded the earlier circular structure. Further changes included repeated reconstruction of the chancel’s eastern end, alteration of the south chapel and extensive roof and structural repairs. Two historic Heies family brasses, taken during the 1970s, were eventually returned. The consecrated grounds include a memorial to 16 boys and their officer who died on the Thames in 1915.
