About Rehoboth Chapel, Pell Green
Rehoboth Chapel, Pell Green, is a former Strict Baptist chapel near Wadhurst in Kent. It remained a place of worship until the later 20th century and has since been converted into a home. The building received Grade II listed status in 1978.
Local Baptists began gathering at Pell Green in 1818, and Thomas Kemp established the chapel six years later as a replacement for their previous meeting place. Extensions followed in 1828, 1831 and 1841, adding a fourth bay and a lean-to. Dating from 1824, the single-storey structure has a timber frame, weatherboarded walls and a slate roof. Round-headed sash windows and hooded doorways divide the exterior bays. Inside, a gallery once extended around three sides on moulded timber columns, while king posts supported the roof. Painted wooden memorial boards, stone monuments and seven brick-lined burial vaults were among its notable features.
