About Cranbrook Strict Baptist Chapel
Cranbrook Strict Baptist Chapel serves a Strict Baptist congregation in Cranbrook, part of Cranbrook and Sissinghurst in Kent. The church is protected at Grade II, having received this designation in 1967. It is also regarded by Tunbridge Wells Borough Council as a building that contributes to the character of Cranbrook’s conservation area.
Founded in 1787, the chapel originated when two cottages with timber-lined interiors were adapted to accommodate religious services. Its formation followed a separation from the General Baptist congregation at Bessels Green. Baptists had been present locally from 1648, after believers arrived from Biddenden, within an area already associated with Nonconformity during the Civil War era. The church retains registers recording baptisms from 1682 among Cranbrook residents who received baptism beyond the established Church. Ministers from the chapel also supported the creation of Providence Baptist Church in 1909.
